Visitors have the chance to sample many types of Cambodian food, from inexpensive local fare to fine dining. French cuisine also enjoys a special place in Siem Reap, and is served at some of the town’s finest restaurants. Restaurants are scattered across town, though many, including many specializing in Cambodian fare, are concentrated in the Old Market/Pub Street area. For authentic Cambodian food on a budget try the Old Market stalls along Street 9. Listings in blue also offer a night life venue. Listings in maroon have traditional performances.

Siem Reap’s nightlife  stretches  to near dawn these days with the bar scene coming to life around dusk and the last few pubs and clubs closing as late as 4 AM. Nightlife venues are located across town but the center of the action is the Pub Street area where many of the most popular bars and clubs are clustered. The Pub Street area also has some of the latest running bars in town, including the Temple Club, Angkor What? and X-Bar. And if music is your thing, a growing number of bars in the Pub Street area offer regular live music  in  the  evenings,  including  The Warehouse opposite the Old Market, and Triangle Lounge,  In Touch, Banana Leaf and X-Bar. Mezze has a DJ in the evenings.

The Old Market (Phsar Chas) and surrounding area, including the nearby Pub Street,  Pub Street alleys and the  Night Markets, are favorites when visiting Siem Reap. Stretching from the river on the east side across to the night markets on Sivutha Blvd, the entire area is now the dining, shopping and nightlife center of town. 
 
Of the various traditional Cambodian markets in Siem Reap, the Old Market  offers the deepest 
selection of souvenirs and curios. There are souvenir vendors throughout much the market, especially on the river side. The north side along Street 9 sports a number of inexpensive food stalls serving Cambodian fare in an interesting, local atmosphere. A good place for a budget meal and a taste of Cambodian street food.

After the sun goes down, the focus shifts to  'Pub Street' and Pub Street alleys. Named for the numerous pubs that line Street 8, it all began in 1998 when Angkor What? Bar opened its doors - the lone pub on a lonely street. These days Pub Street is lined end to end with restaurants, pubs and shops, making it the tourist centre of town, especially after dark. The narrow connecting alleys and passages just off the Street have also filled with small businesses, offering a more relaxed ambiance the ever-busy Pub Street. 
 
Things really gets going on Pub Street around 5 PM as people return from the temples. The curbside 
seating fills, the bars crank up the music and the street is blocked to motor traffic. Most of the drinking venues stay open until at least midnight and couple running until near dawn.

The majority of visitors to Siem Reap arrive either by air at  Siem Reap 
International Airport, by bus from Phnom Penh or buy bus from Thailand via the 
Poipet border crossing. Once in town, most hire transportation to 
the temples by the day (taxi, tuk-tuk, motodup or bicycle,) and grab transport for 
short in-town trips as needed, (see page 94.) Tickets, transport and tours can be

AIRPORT ARRIVAL 
Visas  Visas are available on arrival at the airports in Siem Reap and Phnom Penh and at the nearby Poi pet border crossing as well as most other international border crossings. 
Siem Reap Airport  The  Siem Reap International Airport is a 6km, 10 minute ride from town center. 
Registered vans, car taxis and motodups can behired at the ticket desk located in the terminal. Car 
taxis runs $7/pax and motodup are $2/pax into town. Vans (8 pax max) run $10. Tuk-tuks are also available, charging $5 into town. Most hotels offer free transportation from the airport with advance reservations. 
 
TO/FROM PHNOM PENH   
 
Air/Flights 
Cambodia Angkor Air offers several daily flights between Siem Reap and Phnom Penh. (There are also thrice weekly flights to Sihanoukville.) 
 
Buses 
Bus travel is the most popular means of overland transport between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. 
Several bus companies offer regularly scheduled a/c buses in both directions. It’s about a 6 hour trip and the price ranges from $6-$13, with deluxe buses at the upper end. See page 89 for bus schedules. 
River Ferry  
Local ferry: For part of the year (around September - March) daily ferries ply the Tonle Sap river and lake between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. Ferries depart at 7:30AM daily from the Phnom Penh Port on Sisowath Quay near Street 104. Tickets $25-$35, (251km, 4-6 hours). Tickets can be purchased 
through hotels and travel agents. At Siem Reap, the ferry docks at Chong Khneas, 15km south of Siem Reap town. The ferries are ‘local transport’ and do not meet international safety standards. 
Deluxe river transport:  Compagnie Fluevial Du Mekong (CFM)  offers high quality, very leisurely 
paced 3-10 day boat trips between Siem Reap, to/from phnom penh

Local Transport: Taxis 
Taxi: Private taxi: US$60 or more for the whole car. 4-5 hours. Negotiate the price with a local taxi or arrange a private taxi through your hotel or travel agent. Generally speaking, the better the car, the 
higher the price. 
The Road and Motorcycling to Siem Reap Much of the road to Siem Reap is paved and in good 
condition, but long sections of National Route 6A are currently under construction and in rough shape. Regardless of road conditioned, driving in Cambodia is very challenging and should be attempted only by experienced riders. Road hogging buses and wandering farm animals on the road are the norm. The trip calls for bike no smaller than 250cc and can be made in an easy 5-6 hours, but two days with a layover in Kampong Thom is a more relaxed alternative and allows time to visit the nearby pre-Angkorian ruins of Sambor Prei Kuk as well as explore some of the other sites and minor ruins.   
The usual route departs Phnom Penh via the ‘Japanese Bridge’ and follow 6A north 75km to the 
Skun intersection. (Skun is known for its exotic foods - check out the fried spiders) But due to poor road conditions between Phnom Penh and Skun consider

Angkor Wat is visually, architecturally and artistically breathtaking. It is a massive three-tiered pyramid crowned by five lotus-like towers rising 65 meters from ground level. Angkor Wat is the centerpiece of any visit to the temples of Angkor.  At the apex of Khmer political and military dominance in the region, Suryavarman II constructed Angkor Wat in the form of a massive 'temple-mountain' dedicated to the Hindu god, Vishnu. It served as his state temple, though the temple’s uncommon westward orientation has led some to suggest that it was constructed as Suryavarman II’s funerary temple. Other temples of the same style and period include Thommanon, Banteay Samre, Wat Atwea and Beng Melea, which may have served as a prototype to Angkor Wat.

Angkor Thom (Big Angkor) is a 3km2 walled and moated royal city and was the last capital of the Angkorian empire. After Jayavarman VII recaptured the Angkorian capital from the Cham invaders in 1181, he began a massive building campaign across the empire, constructing Angkor Thom as his new capital city. He began with existing structures such as  Baphuon  and Phimeanakas and built a grand enclosed city around them, adding the outer wall/moat. He then constructed some of Angkor's greatest temples including his state-temple, Bayon, set at the centre of the city. There are five entrances (gates) to the city, one for each cardinal point, and the victory gate leading to the Royal Palace area. Each gate is crowned with 4 giant faces. The South Gate is often the first stop on a tour.

The historically important ruins of a small brick and sandstone temple in very poor condition. The earliest elements date from the pre-Angkorian 8th century. Inscriptions indicate that a temple dedicated to the Hindu ‘god of the depths’ was previously located on the same spot. The towns of southern Cambodia each sport their own unique character. 
Sihanouk Ville is a beach town, a sandy peninsula jutting into the warm Gulf of Thailand, the beaches offering crabshacks, 24-hour bars and everything from a laid back beach chair to an endless party vibe. Kampot is a quaint, lightly touristed old provincial town with classic colonial architecture and surround-ed by picturesque countryside. Kep too has hat edge-of-the-world feel, but a more natural 
setting - jungled mountains and local crab shacks at the ocean edge. Koh Kong astride he Cardamoms is a border town with casino, and a developing eco-tourism destination.

Getting to Sihanoukville 
Cambodia Angkor Air now offers regularly scheduled flights from Siem Reap to Sihanoukville. Overland travel to Sihanoukville passes through Phnom Penh. If you leave early you can get there in a long day, about 9-10 hours. Fly, bus or taxi to Phnom Penh (see pg 88.) Then catch a bus or taxi for the 4 hour ride to Sihanoukville. Some bus companies offer a package ticket through to Sihanoukville. Check with one of the many local travel agent for current air and bus schedules. 
 
SIHANOUK VILLE 
Sihanoukville is Cambodia's premier beach town -  a sandy peninsula jutting into the warm Gulf of Thailand, the beaches offering umbrellas and thatched roofed eateries, 24-hour bars and everything from a laid back beach chair to an endless party vibe. Sihanoukville also serves as a travel hub for the coastal islands and towns - the quaint old city of Kampot, the nearby seaside town of Kep and the border town Koh Kong aside the Cardamom Mountains. And perhaps most special: the nearby tropical islands, a barely discovered destination as yet undeveloped, offering lost beaches and rustic rooms.
